The event
Children work under harsh conditions and earn little to no pay. They are undergoing physical and mental abuse from "carpet masters". Carpet masters are adult supervisors who watch over the children and make sure they are staying on task. If a carpet master witnesses an infraction they have the ability to inflict physical punishment on the child.
In the factories children create carpets, produce up to 400 blocks or bricks a day, and work in sweat shops producing various goods for sale including clothes and shoes. These products can be sold to other countries for a low cost since the children are being paid extremely low wages.
Some children are also sold or used in bonded labor. Bonded labor is a promise to work for repayment of a debt or other obligation. Often the terms of service or length of service are not clearly defined. In extreme cases, bonded labor can be passed on from generation to generation, never repaying the debt.
Since some children begin working at a young age, they do not have the time or money to get an education. This causes the child labor cycle to continue to the next generation.
The current child labor situation in Pakistan is in violation of at least four human rights listed in The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This is a very serious condition currently taking place in Pakistan. Keeping these children working is essential since the economy is so poor; without these children working, the economy would plummet further.
